I work as SW engineer but have no experience in open source.

Hello and welcome.

Information on contributing can be found here. Thank you for offering to assist.

A good first step is to look at the bug tracker and provide patches to fix them. It will get your feet wet and you'll get comfortable with the code base and the culture of the team.

Note: that we are currently working towards the next release of Xfce which is a GTK3 migration. Here is the roadmap and info on the current status.
