Desktop computer brightness control

New user on the Forum but I have been using XFCE for about 2 years with MX Linux.
My question is about the brightness control in the xfce power manager plugin. I understand it is designed essentially for a laptop and has the function disabled when on power vs battery. Is there a way to enable the brightness control when on a desktop computer, obviously plugged in? When viewing at night the full brightness level is too high. Obviously the monitor has a brightness control, but awkward to use. A working control in the plugin would be convenient.

Since I have an ATI/AMD graphics processor I installed the Catalyst Control Center and can control brightness through it. But again a control in the plugin would be very convenient.
