Do local desktop entries override entries in /usr/share/applications/?

If I have a .desktop entry in ~/.local/share/applications/ and the same one in /usr/share/applications/, will the local one be preferred over the global one just for my user? If not, how can I set it to do that?

Yes, the file at ~/.local/share/applications should take precedence. Is this not happening for you?
