Laptop - ASUS X550ZE.
HDD always issues clicking sound, even in idle. I tried 'sudo hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda' and 'sudo hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda' - did not help. This sound appears under Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu Mate 15.04, Xubuntu 14.04 and 15.04, but with KDE distros (Kubuntu 15.04, Fedora 23, openSUSE) it seems to be ok (or rate of clicking is less, so I do not pay attention). GNOME Disks utility tells that HDD is healthy, "badblocks" didn't find bad blocks.

Did you try Xfce in Fedora or openSUSE? That would have been a better comparison.

The same problem on openSUSE Leap - but the sound is different, like something begins to spin time to time and some time it issues a scratch-like sound (even in idle - when I do nothing).
And on openSUSE I also can't use any partition, usb-stick, DVD - it drops me to login screen when I trying.
Fedora 23 - I can't install it: installation icon is not react on clicking (in both KDE and XFCE versions).
Xubuntu 14.04.3, 15.04 - mouse freezes.
Ubuntu, Ubuntu Mate - there are are clicks too.

I don't think these are Xfce issues, particularly the drive clicking. Probably best to ask the distro's support.
