removing/making transparent icons in panel

hello all. i'm currently running xfce (4.6) panel with openbox on debian stable. i'm considering switching to xfce 4.8 and upgrading to testing, so i'm looking at different components of the DE, i've got a bunch installed, including the panel. so i was wondering if it was possible to remove icons from the tasklist (windows list) in the panel, leaving only text ? or to change them so they don't follow those set for the whole system (since some don't anyway), or perhaps make them fully transparent?
as afaik there's no clicky gui option, i wondered if there's a config file somewhere that could be edited to achieve this?
thanks.
