Hi
I installed Xubuntu 11.10 as a virtualbox guest OS.
I want to know is there anyway to reduce memory usage. I don't care about visual effects. I only want to reduce RAM usage.
thanks,

Maybe you should turn off Composite?
Menu -> Settings -> Settings Manager -> Window Manager Tweaks -> Compositor -> Enable display Compositing (set Disable)

I did that. But it doesn't have a significant effect. I found that Xorg uses more ram than xfce-desktop.
Any more idea?

Ok, another question - What kind of CPU do you emulate? (your processor, MHZ, Cores (VBox / RL), Ram (VBox / RL), Graphics Memory (Vbox / RL)

Sorry for my bad english
PS. If you are good (experience?) Linux user - u can use sysv-rc-conf to disable not-used services

I recommended you - VMware Player
It's free and faster than VirtualBox - It should be better for u.
Try it (if u can)

PS. BTW - Do you have Guest Additions installed?

Most of the ram you see is shared, therefore X is using more ram then the applications.

Xubuntu is not a particularly light implementation of Xfce. You may be better off trying the Debian Xfce spin, as it has a similar underlying tool set. The only caveat is you will either have to configure sudo for yourself, or get used to using su.
