I'm not sure that's possible - how would the window know which button is positioned where or when the button is being hovered over. The hover effect is related to the button.
That makes sense. What about its borders? If I add a 1px margin, this is what happens to my beautiful border:
If I increase it, obviously the border will move in further and further, like this.
Edit: Actually, forget about it. It looks like I really need buttons to be at 62 to 64 pixels for background effects to be visible.

I'd rather increase icon size for tasklist items. It's way too small for my taste. This page mentions that it can be customized via gtkrc-2.0. How about gtk.css?

The problem with GTK, when increasing icon sizes, is that it blurs the image (down-sampling is much better). Have a read through this thread for more information about re-sizing the images.

gtk-icon-sizes is no longer supported by GTK - in later versions of GTK2 or in GTK3.

Same here. Icons become blurry.
What I tested instead is adding individual launchers in place of the Window Buttons plugin and it works. The only problem is that, of course, there is no way to control their windows. I found one of your scripts that add this feature (basically comes down to "wmctrl -a || start_app"). I'll incorporate and slightly modify it to fit my needs, if you don't mind.
Although I'm not sure if it's possible to add right-click context menus without messing with the code. I've got to dig deeper. Regardless, it's so much fun. Hopefully, I'll finish it by the New Year. I want to be the one to start off our 2022 thread.
Actually, I will just use desktop entries. This is how it works in Unity. Right-clicking brings up actions for applications, not their windows.
Do you know of a way to place whisker's categories horizontally at the bottom instead of the ugly username?

As of 2.7.0, both those options (horizontal category and hide username pane) were added to the whiskermenu.

Oh, wow! That's one beautiful Whisker Menu! It looks like you've got something new coming for 2022, too.
I wasn't aware of that. That's very neat. Do I have to uninstall the xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin first and then recompile the new version from source? I'm going to wait until the latest version gets uploaded to one of Xubuntu's PPAs. It shouldn't take long.

I can't seem to style the entire log out dialog window. Here's what I've got:
.xfsm-logout-dialog {
padding: 0px;
margin: 0px;
border-radius: 10px;
}
It looks like it's inside another window, otherwise I don't know why there are black borders and corners around the dialog. Is there a clever, proper way of theming it? Tried .keycap with same the result. I don't see any other hints in the source of xfce4-session.

Hmm. Looks more like an artifact of non-transparency.
Try adding these individually, one at a time, to see if it disappears:
box-shadow: none;
background: transparent;
Also try renaming first line to "dialog.xfsm-logout-dialog {" and then trying those two again.

Whew! Found a way to make it work with GtkInspector. Rebooting every time for changes to take effect wasn't fun. Just had to Ctrl+Shift+I on that dialog, which revealed another widget XfsmLogoutDialog. The source has this:
struct _XfsmLogoutDialogClass
{
GtkDialogClass __parent__;
};
and many other lines hinting it might be the parent (at least to my ignorant existence). Could anything be done with it? Like with -XfwmTabwinWidget-icon-size or -XfcePanelWindowHidden-popup-delay or something similar.

Interesting. Using your inital config, I tested this on my 21.10 Xubuntu VM and saw the same. I reloaded xfdesktop "xfdesktop -R" and the dark patches disappeared. Now I can't get them back. Does running "xfdesktop -R" do that for you as well?

Thanks a lot but no luck for me.
Also sent hangup signal with `kill -HUP $(pidof xfdesktop)`
Mine is Xubuntu 20.04

That's only because the butoon widget positioning exceeds the space that was pulled back by your border-radius command.
Do you have the compositor enabled?

Yes, it is enabled.
To me, it really looks like it cannot draw transparency.

To test if other windows exhibited a similar behavior, I launched Catfish and a bunch of other apps (like atril) with CSD enabled and the window decorations (including transparency) were drawn correctly. Launching the logout dialog with `GTK_CSD=1 xfce4-session-logout`, however, didn't change anything. I'll try removing the whole ruleset and adding declarations one by one tomorrow. If that doesn't help, I'll try creating a custom background and sticking it in place.
Appreciate your tips and guidance.

Do you happen to know which call dims the screen on dialog invocation? Could that be it messing with drawing transparency? What do you think?
Arc and Greybird, a new user with default Greybird have it, too.

I'm thinking this function. Seems to dig into Xwindows calls.

They have the rounded corners but not the transparency artifact. Is this a screenshot from your system?

It's hard to spot because the radius is so small (looks like it's 3px) but it's there if you zoom in. Try with xfwm's desktop zoom. It's Alt+mouse wheel on my end. Probably should have set a white background. Sorry for that.
Is this a screenshot from your system?
Yep. Taken from a new user environment.
EDIT: So it's called fadeout and it's drawn by cairo. It's rgba value is 0,0,0,0.5. commit e90852df0f772184546320871c69d3358699d182 mentions this:
commit e90852df0f772184546320871c69d3358699d182
Author: Nick Schermer <nick@xfce.org>
Date: Sun Nov 27 15:31:23 2011 +0100
Improve fadeout code.
Don't use some random color, but use black since it the easiest
on the users' eyes. Also use rgba if compositing is enable, this
is not only faster but looks nicer too, since everything behind
the dialog continues to work.
Anyway, it doesn't seem to be configurable.

The reason for using xwininfo is that it doesn't appear in wmctrl's list.

UPDATE: nevermind, this does exactly that:
#xfwm-tabwin label { font-size: 0px; }
#xfwm-tabwin button label { color: @dark_fg_color; font-size: 14px}
How do I hide the label at the very bottom?
When I do something like this:
#xfwm-tabwin label { font-size: 0px; }
the button labels disappear as well:
Regarding the logout dialog, adding a border-image (semi-transparent with rounded corners like in xfwm-tabwin) didn't make any difference. Here's another example:
dialog.xfsm-logout-dialog { border: 20px dotted; background: alpha(@average_bg, 0.9) padding-box; }
I noticed that the dialog geometries are at constant size. Borders are drawn inwards.
Also, I'd like to get rid of the checkbutton. `dialog.xfsm-logout-dialog .text-button { opacity: 0; }` does it in a way, but maybe there is an xfconf property (like ShowSuspend boolean, etc.)?
