Hey, ToZ, did the OP ever state specifically which of the three "function key states" his current distro installation has placed his Applebook into? There is:

(keys operate to change brightness/etc. directly),
(function-key modifier must be pressed (held??), as keys normally emulate PC function keys)
(third one I don't rememember. Either toggles on function-modifier key or disabled)

Usually, if you install some other packages together, the brightness and sound keys should work without any configuration:

    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install xfce4-goodies xorg dbus-x11 x11-xserver-utils
